Androgyny redefined
January 27th 2011 20:12
19-year-old Aussie modelling sensation Andrej Pejic is definitely one to watch in 2011! The softly spoken, strikingly beautiful blonde is in high demand in the international fashion world, modelling for the likes of John Galliano, Paul Smith, Marc Jacobs, Raf Simons and, most recently, renowned French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. But while Pejic may appear (to the untrained eye) to be just like any other gorgeous blonde, there is one significant detail that sets this model apart from the rest: the fact that Andrej Pejic... is a man!
"His beauty was extraordinary," says Matthew Anderson, director of Chadwick Models in Melbourne, who immediately signed Pejic when they met in early 2009. "He's also intelligent and it's amazing, really, that he survived growing up in Broadmeadows [an outer suburb of Melbourne], that he's just so comfortable in his own skin."
For Anderson, Pejic was a calculated risk. While he knew that "he probably wasn't going to be commercial," Anderson was aware of the rising interest in 'femimen' on the international scene and could clearly see that Pejic's aesthetic fit with this idea: his beauty "was really exciting, very interesting, very high fashion," he told the Sydney Morning Herald last year.
Serbian-born Pejic, who stands at 6'2" and models both men's and women's clothing, is superbly confident with his androgynous appearance and is comfortable allowing stylists to play up the more feminine aspects of his face.
"I was happy with that look because I was always experimenting with it, even before I started modelling," the teenager told journalists last year. "There are a lot of boys who look like me in the fashion industry, but they're not prepared to have it made intense like that."
As for the clothes themselves? "Personally I don't care what gender a piece of clothing is assigned to as long as it's aesthetically appealing to me," Pejic told ninemsn recently. "Although shooting womenswear can be a lot less restrictive, which ultimately is more fun."
With his spectacular looks and a maturity that belies his youthful age, we fashion-loving folk can expect to see a lot more of this uniquely beautiful Aussie model in the years to come.

Of course there's all the usual complaints going on (check out the comments at the end of the linked article)... but personally I think it's a really clever move by the company who hired him, as it shows that their product works, by giving a natural-looking B cup bust to women who are totally flat chested.
Can't wait to see what he does next!
