How to dress like a model

August 15th 2008 02:47
Now, I'm not talking about the clothes models wear on the catwalk or in magazines - that's a no-brainer. If you want those clothes, simply go out and buy them. What I'm talking about is dressing like a model who is on her day off and has been snapped by the paparazzi eating lunch, shopping or hanging with friends.

Gisele Bundchen

The first thing you'll notice is the clean lines of her outfit, the simplicity of the designs she's wearing, and how flattering her clothes are on her body. More often than not, she'll be wearing well-cut jeans and a simple shirt, jumper or tank top, or a monochromatic dress. It's rare that you see a model wearing something outlandish that screams "look at me!" because she gets enough attention for her beauty as it is. Models know how to dress in a way that doesn't overpower the eye: they wear the clothes, as opposed to clothes wearing them. Often you won't remember exactly what it is they were wearing, just that they looked fabulous in it.

Alessandra Ambrosio

Cindy Crawford

Models rarely wear makeup when they're not working - they don't need to - and so you should keep your makeup as natural-looking as possible if you want to emulate this style. A bit of concealer to conceal blemishes, powder to erase shine, mascara to enlarge the eyes and a smear of lip gloss should be all you'll need. You'll also find that they rarely wear high heels unless they're on the catwalk or at some promotional event. When your legs are as long as a model's, heels can make you look almost freakish in a non-catwalk, non-photo-shoot environment.

Kate Moss

Elle Macpherson

A key factor in a model's day-off outfit is that her accessories will always be up-to-the-minute. A model knows what's hot in the world of accessories - that is, hats, jewellery, belts, scarves and sunglasses - and she often gets them for free as a gift for that day's photo shoot or fashion show. The beauty of this is that accessories are relatively cheap, and they update any outfit, so be like a model and stock up on new accessories regularly. But don't overdo your accessorising - details should never overpower the clothes themselves.

Miranda Kerr with boyfriend Orlando Bloom

Keeping your hair clean and shiny, your skin blemish-free, your figure reasonably trim and your posture upright will all help in making you look like a model, because being a model is not just about clothes; it's about attitude, and presence. Having a simple but stylish outfit with updated accessories will add to these important factors and will make you look as much like a model as your natural beauty allows.

If you live in Australia then surely you've spotted the proliferation of frangipani stickers on the rear windows of cars. These sickly sweet, vaguely offensive and completely unnecessary icons of femininity seem to accost you in traffic, everywhere you go. Three years ago it may have been original to whack one of these stickers on your car, but now it is so popular that there is actually an anti-frangipani movement emerging. One facebook group - 'Frangipanis on cars: AUSTRALIA SAYS NO' - has more than 4,000 members, and that number is steadily growing.

But what is it that compels people (or women, specifically) to purchase and apply such a sticker to their vehicle? In my opinion, bumper stickers and rear window stickers of any kind devalue the look of the car, particularly when the sun has faded them to the point where they are nothing but a flower-shaped white blob. The frangipani used to be a unique and much lesser-known bloom, now, thanks to the frangipanis-on-cars movement, it is as cliched as roses on Valentine's Day. It has become utterly mainstream, and for this reason, no self-respecting fashion-conscious girl should ever consider placing one on her own mode of transport.

Personally, I love frangipanis - the real variety. But as a sticker on a car? No way. Yawn. It's tired, it's old, it's been done. If you have one on your car already, think seriously about taking it off. Because in the latter half of 2008, no girl who considers herself unique would be seen dead in a frangipani-embellished car.

The gladiator heel

August 11th 2008 13:36
When Carrie Bradshaw was spotted wearing gladiator heels not once, but three times in the Sex and the City movie, we knew that we'd have a new trend on our hands. Sure enough, celebrities of all persuasions have been seen sporting this chic new style of late. The gladiator heel is essentially a sexier take on last year's flat gladiator sandal. It's chunky, it's bold, and it's a trend in footwear that will likely be big news by the time the Aussie summer rolls around.

You can wear gladiator heels in whichever colour you like, but most celebs - as the photos below demonstrate - prefer dark brown or classic black. As these heels are already eye-catching enough in their design, to wear them in a bright colour would probably be overkill. Best worn with a short dress, these heels will give your otherwise feminine outfit an element of toughness. Gladiators - are you ready?

Skinny jeans are over!

August 11th 2008 04:47
While the look on the streets of Sydney right now is skinny jeans tucked into knee-high boots, don't expect this style to stay trendy for much longer. Right now in Hollywood, stars are embracing the baggy, 'boyfriend' style of jeans, which are not only far more comfortable than their skinny counterparts, they're much more flattering for those of us without perfect figures.

Sixties headbands

August 2nd 2008 10:19
Now this look is only for the brave among us! Sixties headbands, mostly thin and beaded, are making a comeback on the celebrity circuit. Last year it was all about scarves tied commando-style around the head, so this new trend is a more refined version of that. Go for a thinner headband if you want to keep the look as feminine as possible.

Blue eyeliner - it's back!

August 1st 2008 12:45
It's been a while, but secretly we all knew that this trend would make its return one day. Blue eyeliner is replacing the boring old black and smoky eyes, and the effect is at once vibrant and very modern. You can choose to keep it subtle and go for a midnight blue, or be dramatic and choose a light blue, blending it well with eyeshadow to maximise the effect.

The Olsen Influence

August 1st 2008 02:04
They're Hollywood starlets, entrepreneurs and successful fashion designers, now Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have turned their tiny twin hands to writing: with their first book Influence due out at the end of October. In it they talk candidly about their lives and those who have shaped their careers, both in Hollywood and in the fashion industry. Among those interviewed for the book were elite fashion designers John Galliano, Christian Louboutin, Diane Von Furstenburg and Karl Lagerfeld.

The slouchy beanie

July 31st 2008 14:59
Blame it on Rachel Bilson. Since she began wearing her slouchy beanies over a year ago - usually perched jauntily on the crown of her head - Aussie women have taken up the trend with gusto. This winter, everywhere you look in Sydney you'll see slouchy woollen beanies, sometimes in grey, often in red, always warm and practical for covering bad hair too. Various celebrities have picked up on this trend, as it's such an easy-to-wear one, and you most certainly won't break the bank if you decide to pick up on this trend (hats aren't for everyone, I know). I expect this look to last for another season or two, as these beanies are almost universally flattering, and will give your outfit an urban edge.

The fur-trimmed jacket

July 29th 2008 03:31
We Aussies may still be in the throes of winter, but already summer stock is starting to appear in stores. And what does that mean? You guessed it, sales! You can get great bargains right now in winter clothing, and this includes the fur-trimmed jackets that have been popping up all over the place. Anyone who's anyone is rugging up in jackets that have faux fur around the collar - and usually this fur is removable, so the jacket can be worn for years to come if fur trim goes out of style. This season's faux fur is realistic-looking, unlike the shaggy fur that has been popular in years past.

Both are respected Hollywood actors, both are frequently in the paparazzi spotlight and both have a unique style when it comes to what they wear. Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal also happen to look great when photographed together - each of their styles complements the other. The brother and sister are true Hollywood royalty, coming from a family of actors and producers.
