Celebrity Style: Isabel Lucas

June 30th 2009 10:55
There's something so sweet and innocent, almost childlike, about Isabel Lucas. Sure, the 24-year-old hots up the screen in this month's Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen - with some even declaring her hotter than stunning co-star Megan Fox - but when she's not in front of the cameras her style is relaxed and organic, with a definite 70s edge. She rarely wears makeup, allowing her natural (and considerable) beauty to speak for itself, and she's not one to load herself down with jewellery either.

Although the Aussie starlet has lived in Hollywood for the last two years, she still calls Australia home, and loves nothing more than being with friends and family, and her horses, in her hometown of Cairns. Her love of nature is expressed in her clothing style: she favours cotton over synthetic fabrics, and is a big fan of embroidery and quirky hats. Her look is very feminine without being prissy; although she's frequently seen in dresses and florals, she never looks too 'done', and this keeps her looking fresh and natural.

The success of her style lies in the fact that she never seems to try too hard. Rather than following trends, she's more likely to wear what she knows suits her, and what appeals to her tastes. This is not to say that she always gets it right, however - the Pucci-style shift, bright red lips and over-the-top hat she's sporting in the pic below is a prime example of this! Maybe that's why she looks so uncomfortable in the shot...

Most of the time she gets it spot-on, and for red carpet events can look truly breathtaking, usually keeping it sweet and simple as opposed to overtly sexy. I predict that her career is only in its infancy, and that we can expect to see much more of this gorgeous girl in years to come.

Black leather pants

June 26th 2009 01:04
It seems the biker chick look is in full swing! First it was the black leather jacket, now black leather pants have come back into vogue. Models and celebs have been sporting them for a while but they've only just started popping up in Sydney stores. The trick with wearing black leather pants is a good fit, and balancing the rest of your outfit around them. They should be tight without looking as though they've been sprayed on - if you resemble Olivia Newton John in Grease, good for you, but they really don't need to be that tight!

Make sure the rest of your outfit is simple and relatively low-key: a simple black or white top should suffice. Don't show too much cleavage or you'll risk appearing too dominatrix-like, and know that pairing black leather pants with a black leather jacket is overkill. However, if you can manage to get the balance just right, you'll have a look that is equal parts tough and sexy, and be one step ahead of the fashion pack. Check out these celeb photos for guidance on how to get this tricky trend exactly right.

It wasn't that long ago that I was complaining about how lazy most Australian men appeared to be when it came to what they wore. Us girls could be dressed to the nines, having spent eons selecting just the right shoes and accessories to go with that hot new outfit, while our men took less than thirty seconds to shrug themselves into an old hoodie, jeans and filthy sneakers. Looking around Sydney now, however, it's quite a shock to see just how fashion-conscious many of the young men have become. They know what suits them, they know what combinations work, and some of them even know their labels.

So what is it that has made the average Aussie man open his eyes to the world of fashion? According to some, male fashion has simply become, well.... fashionable. "I think it's no longer uncool to be fashionable," says Karen Webster, director of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. "In fact, the opposite is now de rigeur: to be stylish, to take pride in your appearance. It's not just boys doing it for girls, boys are doing it for themselves.

"You've got footballers now looking cool with hairstyles that change every week. In the music scene you are seeing almost a return to the glam or new romantic era. Boys are really making an effort to dress up and in more extreme circumstances are looking quite fanciful - almost dandyish."

Others believe that there's more to it than just trends, however - they see men's interest in fashion as being a lag effect of feminism. Once upon a time, men could get away with looking like they'd just gotten out of bed, but not anymore, says Marita McCabe, professor of psychology at Deakin University. "Males previously just needed to earn money and be in powerful positions, and as long as they had those things they were attractive to women," she says.

"Women now are much more financially independent and they're not as reliant on men to support them and also they are demanding more. The whole balance has changed - previously women were the compliant ones, now they are saying power and money is not enough, you have also got to look good."

So it would seem that the average man's burgeoning interest in fashion is not merely the result of a trend, but evidence that the pendulum of gender equality may finally have swung: at least in the arena of style and personal grooming. The figures speak volumes as well; according to IBISWorld, men's fashion is worth a whopping $2.7 billion a year in Australia.

But is this really evidence of a cultural revolution, or is it just the latest cultural trend to hit our shores, like metrosexuality did a couple of years ago? Is the fact that more and more women are 'wearing the pants' at home and in the workplace pushing men to take more pride in their appearance? Or are there other factors involved? Let me know your thoughts.

There were rumours circulating last year that Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson was to become the face of Chanel, and it turns out that they weren't far off the mark! The 19-year-old beauty is to become the face of Burberry for their upcoming autumn ad campaign. The prestigious British fashion house prides itself on timeless elegance, a trait that is epitomised by the young actress - therefore making her the ideal choice as Burberry's main model for their autumn catalogue.

Looking hot in a cold economy

May 30th 2009 06:12
So the global economy has gone bust and forced us all to re-think our spending. Nothing new there. Several of the world's most prominent fashion houses have gone under, too, the most recent being Christian Lacroix. But just because we're experiencing the worst recession in decades, doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice our own sense of style. In fact, when it comes to fashion, this economic downturn could almost be a blessing in disguise: it forces us to be both creative and resourceful when it comes to what we wear, separating the truly stylish from the rest of the fashion pack.

Sharp shoulders

May 27th 2009 10:38
They're all over the catwalks and some of the biggest names have been spotted wearing them, but the real question is: will big shoulders ever make a return to the mainstream? Shoulder pads were huge - literally - in the 80s, so much so that they became iconic of the tragic 80s throwback, along with legwarmers, hair scrunchies and fishnet stockings. When something has had a negative connotation for so long, it's hard to imagine that it can ever become cool again, but this seems to be exactly what is happening right now.

Katy Perry is becoming almost as well known for her bizarre fashion choices as she is for her music! While the I Kissed A Girl songstress may not be in the same league as Madonna or Cher when it comes to musical fame, she's certainly following in their footsteps when it comes to headline-grabbing sartorial style.

We're two days in and not even a blackout could stop the designs from dazzling the crowd! Several new trends appear to be emerging from the ranks of the Aussie designers, some in obvious contrast to the designs of years past, and others that were entirely unexpected. In particular, we're seeing lots of unusual necklines, cutout pieces, futuristic shapes and graphic prints - with not a scrap of lace or floral to be seen.
