Zara comes to the party

The last two years have seen a big surge in overseas retailers opening stores in Australia: first there was Topshop, then Gap, and now European favourite Zara has realized the spending potential of the Aussie fashionista. The group managing director of Westfield Australia and New Zealand, Robert Jordan, has confirmed that there will soon be a Zara store opening in the Westfield Sydney complex on Pitt Street - the commercial precinct that is currently undergoing a $1.2 billion redevelopment.
"We're very excited to have the first Zara store in Australia, it's a great coup," Robert Jordan told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Jordan said that the Spanish-based retailer would give similar local brands, like Country Road and Witchery, a run for their money - but not in a way that should give them cause for concern.
"Retail is an ever-changing environment and this is another move that shows the world is a competitive place, and there is no reason Australian retailers shouldn't welcome that competition,'' he said.
And as for our Melbourne counterparts? No deal has been signed yet, but that's not to say that it won't be happening some time in the near future!
''Our deal is not exclusive," said Mr Jordan. "I am quite sure they haven't come all the way to Australia to open only one store.''
Zara is known worldwide for having well priced, timeless pieces mixed in with garments that are right on trend. It currently has 1600 stores open in 77 countries and is the go-to for Aussie fashionistas when holidaying overseas.
The three-level Westfield Sydney store will offer a full range of women's, men's, and children's clothing, and is expected to be open by the middle of next year.
