Topshop to hit Sydney's Oxford Street
October 1st 2009 02:10
In less than one month's time, the British fashion empire Topshop will be coming to Sydney. Rather than being a stand-alone store it will be incorporated into the Oxford Street, Paddington boutique Incu. However, with the excitement the news has generated among Sydney's fashion-conscious, this blogger believes it's only a matter of time until Topshop opens several boutiques of its own, not just in Sydney but in Melbourne as well.
The Topshop range - which features pieces from several highly respected designers, including Christopher Kane and Peter Jensen - has been available to Australians online for some time, but like many shoppers, I've never been keen on buying something unless I've been able to try it on. With 340 stores across Britain and partnerships in Paris, New York and Hong Kong, it comes as no surprise that Topshop has decided to expand its empire into the Southern Hemisphere as well.
"From my understanding of Australian retail, the designer end has become very directional and progressive and there is a lot more interest internationally," said Topshop's senior buyer Rachel Proud. "Incu approached us and if someone does that and the profile fits, then we look into it. Our senior buyers are constantly looking at new innovative shops around the world and Incu was on the radar. I think it will be fantastic," Proud added.
As do I. When Topshop designs first appeared in New York, there were people literally lined up around the block. Incu's founder, Vincent Wu, doubts that this will be the case for shoppers in Sydney - "It's not our mentality" - but I'm not so sure. "It's a new market for us so it will be interesting," he said.
For those of us who aren't anywhere near Sydney, you can still buy online at www.topshop.com
