In just a few short years, the fascinator has risen out of fashion obscurity to become costume de rigueur for posh daytime events. The problem with the fascinator is that it walks a tightrope between two more established pieces of headwear: it's not quite a hat, but it's not merely a hair accessory either. As such, it's a tricky piece to get looking just right, and many women have failed in the process.

But not Kate Middleton. Failure is simply not an option for her.

Wardrobe classics: The plain white t-shirt

Fashion news? Hardly... but every now and then I like to write about the classic pieces, the staples, the items that no wardrobe should be without. And when it comes to the basics, there's nothing that springs to mind faster than the plain white cotton t-shirt. It's a truly timeless piece of clothing that can be paired with just about anything, depending on whether you're going for a casual weekend vibe, or just need a reliable starting point from which to create a fabulous layered outfit.

Sales time!

Online sales, that is - good lord, how I love technology! If you're feeling apprehensive about the idea of elbowing your way through the hoards of post-Christmas bargain hunters (or, like me, have simply done it one too many times already) then your best bet is staying right where you are and snapping up your sales items from home. Knowing your era

I read a great little article on Jezebel a few days ago that I thought would be worth sharing with my lovely Fashion Peach readers - it's all about the idea of knowing your era. Basically what this means is knowing which period of time embraced your body shape, and then taking your clothing inspiration from the popular styles of that time in order to create the most flattering outfits that you can. It makes a lot of sense to me, as each decade in recent history held up a different woman's body type as being the 'ideal', and naturally, the fashions of that decade began to revolve around this ideal (whether it was a boyish figure, a voluptuous one, or somewhere in between). It's a simple idea, but one that gives the idea of retro dressing a whole new dimension. Here's the link.

Sophia Loren's womanly curves were the epitome of late 1950s chic, and her sense of style enhanced them.

Why there's no such thing as nail colour trends

By definition, a 'trend' must have some kind of prevailing tendency, that is, there must be some mode of similarity between the people or things that are following that particular trend - or else it is simply not a trend at all. And yet, when it comes to nail colours, we are so often bombarded with suggestions that 'this season's hottest trend' is one particular colour, when in actual fact it is many! Sure, there are occasions when one style will dominate over all others, but most of the time, nail 'trends' are as diverse as the models, celebrities and stylish women who are wearing them - and in my opinion, it is all just a marketing ploy to get women to buy as many different colours as they possibly can, regardless of whether those colours suit their own unique tastes.

Nail colour trends are a fashion fallacy.

So far, sew good

Like many women, I'm not usually one to wear my clothes until they wear out. Once they've hit their use-by date, in fashion terms, they'll either be sold on ebay or given to charity. But there is the occasional piece - whether it be jeans, a much-loved jacket or in my case, a great dress - that we'll want to keep in our wardrobes for the life of the garment, and in some cases, beyond its natural life. This is when the old-school arts of sewing and mending come in handy, and although I hadn't sewed in more than ten years, I'm rather proud of the result of my own personal project: successfully turning my favourite floral summer dress into what is now, my favourite floral summer skirt.

From dress... to skirt! This took less than ten minutes to achieve.

Lady in red...

In a season where sequins and sparkles are dominating the dresses worn by Sydney's bright young things, you can still stand out from the crowd the old-fashioned way by slipping into something a little more... red! We all know that red is the colour of passion, love and all that jazz, but did you know that men actually consider a woman wearing red to be more attractive than those who aren't?

Looking hot in a cold economy

So the global economy has gone bust and forced us all to re-think our spending. Nothing new there. Several of the world's most prominent fashion houses have gone under, too, the most recent being Christian Lacroix. But just because we're experiencing the worst recession in decades, doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice our own sense of style. In fact, when it comes to fashion, this economic downturn could almost be a blessing in disguise: it forces us to be both creative and resourceful when it comes to what we wear, separating the truly stylish from the rest of the fashion pack.
