The Spring 2009 Forecast
September 1st 2009 10:18
We may not have felt the last of the cold winds yet, but with Spring officially here, it's time to take a look at what Sydney's trendsetters will be wearing as the weather warms up. The overall feel this season is bold, bright and feminine with a distinct bohemian vibe, and there's a few key styles that are sure to be huge by the time Summer rolls around. Let's take a closer look at the Spring fashion forecast for 2009.
By far the most common feature of all the latest Aussie catwalk shows has been the use of bold, vibrant colour - whether in one block or in patterns, for the most part it seems that the brighter the colour is, the better. Reds, oranges, neon pinks, and on the other end of the spectrum, vibrant indigo tones were the most popular but as is always the way with colour, the shade that works the best with your skin tone is going to be the right one for you. Pattern-wise, just about anything goes, but if it's hippie style, folk printed or boho, then so much the better. The new tie dye is also beginning to gain momentum among Sydney's trendiest folk, though of course it's not for everyone!
And while pants are by no means obsolete, Spring 2009 is all about the dress. Maxi dresses still reign supreme (and goddess dresses for those special occasions) while the LCD is the go-to for nights out on the town. Celebs both here and overseas continue to favour the one-shoulder dress while strapless dresses are making a strong return to form also.
As we saw at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week back in May, metallics are still on the scene for evening wear, and tailored jackets with a sharp shoulder (as opposed to the 80s style of big shoulder) are the way to go when it comes to covering up on those breezy nights. Harem pants have stuck around for daytime wear, and although heels are certainly not dead, they have been largely superseded by Spring's newest incarnations of strappy sandals and ballerina flats. If you do decide to wear heels, then go all the way and make them skyscrapers, but only if you can actually walk in them!
While this forecast is by no means exhaustive, it's definitely a good start when it comes to inspiration for your next purchases. I'll keep you updated with the newest and hottest looks as they appear, whether in mags, on the street, in the stores or on the bods of models and celebrities. Here's to channeling the Springtime!
