The LWD (little white dress)
September 9th 2010 00:36
We're already more than a week into spring (if you're in the southern hemi, that is) and being bombarded with the usual florals and whatnot that seem to be associated with the season every single year. In the stores it's all faded denim and nude tones, mixed in with that military trend that just won't seem to die (no problems here, I love the tougher look myself!) But if you've been keeping an eye on celebrity-land, it seems that for nights on the town, it's all about the little white dress... short, but not necessarily sweet, and unlike some of the neutral shades of the season it's ideal for just about every skin colour in existence.
There's really not much to explain in regards to wearing a LWD, except that it must be short - no-one wants to look like a wannabe bride! Because of the basic shade, you can be as out-there as you like with the cut (hello, Kristen Stewart).
If you'd rather keep your little white dress at the understated end of the scale, then make sure that your accessories (or neckline) add something to the mix, to avoid looking bland. For example, Diane Kruger's white Calvin Klein shift dress is as simple as they come, but the matching peep-toe platform sandals and the miles of tanned leg prevent her from fading into the background. Vanessa Hudgens sexes her LWD up with cleavage and silver heels, while Kate Bosworth embraces this season's obsession with draping. The sweet, loose side braid completes her look.
And if you feel that your little white dress is still lacking that punch, then remember that belts are always an option! Zoe Saldana's black sash looks sensational, and Cameron Diaz and Ashley Greene aren't looking too shabby either...
However you choose to wear it, make sure that there's at least something eye-catching about your LWD - if not the dress itself, then the shoes, hair, jewellery or your handbag. And never forget that attitude is everything! Happy dress hunting girls, and here's to warmer weather being just around the corner.
