The denim vest

This is one style that is built to last! The vest - hugely popular in the 80s - came back into vogue more than three years ago, and while a few of us (myself included) expected it to be merely a flash-in-the-pan revival, it has since proven itself otherwise. The latest vest incarnation is the denim vest, which works beautifully with the hippie chic style of dressing that is expected to reign supreme on the streets of Sydney this summer.
I like to think of vests more as accessories than as articles of clothing: they're not necessary, as such, but they certainly add interest to an otherwise ordinary outfit. You can wear them buttoned up or open (I prefer open) and although they work well with pants, the most modern pairing is with a maxi dress. As for the colour? Faded denim is best, as the look you are going for is laid-back and organic.
One thing to remember is not to overdo the denim: your safest option is to make the denim vest the only denim garment in your outfit. Denim-on-denim is a major fashion no-no, but if you must pair your denim vest with jeans, then make them black. Blake Lively gets away with denim-on-denim in the pic below, but she's a rare exception to the rule, and only manages it because her denims are of different colours.
