Taylor Momsen: 'I dress like a high-class hooker'

Given that she's just turned seventeen, it may not have been the most appropriate thing to tell the media.... but then, Taylor Momsen isn't exactly known for her propriety! The actress, model and musician recently told Spin magazine that, if she were to describe her fashion sense, it would be akin to that of a "high class" prostitute - but that she still dresses in a way that feels right for her.
"I dress for myself," said Momsen, who is currently making waves in the US with her rock band The Pretty Reckless. "Clearly, it's provocative, but it makes me feel good. And if the only reason it makes someone uncomfortable is because I'm seventeen, then that person's a scumbag because it shouldn't matter."
Known for her liberal use of black eyeliner, leather jackets, garter belts, torn stockings, stripper heels and tiny skirts, the Gossip Girl star is one tween role model that many parents wish they could do without. Psychologist and author of The Cult of Celebrity, Cooper Lawrence, said that the message Taylor's clothing is sending to fans is far more disturbing than that of mere teenage rebellion against authority.
"She looks like she’s a hooker who’s been ravaged sexually - like she’s had rough sex," said Lawrence. "She’s wearing clothing that prostitutes wore in bordellos. A girl who wears garters is sending the message that she’s easily available sexually."
Of course, she didn't always look this way - when Momsen was first cast as Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl, her look was pretty and wholesome. Now... not so much. Momsen (who famously joked in an interview, "I f---ed a priest once") has fully embraced the rock chick style of The Runaways' Cherie Currie circa 1976, and is unhappy when other (in her mind) less hard core musicians than herself try to do the same.
"People think pop is rock, and the lines are getting blurred," she told Spin magazine. "Now Rihanna's wearing f---ing leather jackets, and it's really annoying."
In addition to her music and acting commitments, Momsen is unlikely to be fading out of the fashion world anytime soon: she's been made the face of Madonna's Material Girl clothing line, and will soon be appearing in an ad campaign for John Galliano's new perfume.
So what do you think of Taylor's style? Is it unfair and prudish of us to say that she shouldn't be dressing like a prostitute? Are we, in fact, "scumbags" for saying so? Or is Taylor setting herself up for exploitation by wearing such trashy outfits? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment in the section below.
