Midwinter trend: Shearling
July 8th 2010 03:06
In a refreshing change from the fur coats that have dominated runways for the last couple of winter seasons, Burberry Prorsum has brought back that fleece of a far more humane origin: shearling! Their Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection had several coats featuring the warm-as-toast lining, including the oversized coat pictured below that has lately become a celebrity favourite. Other designers, including Viktor & Rolf, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Marni, and more have taken up the shearling trend with gusto.
The beauty of shearling is in its practicality; there's nothing better than having a wool fleece lining in your jacket to keep those wintery chills at bay. It also looks great paired with leather and denim, and has a relaxed appeal to it (which one fashion commentator referred to as "having its roots in bogan style").
Shearling also evokes images of old-school aviation and the military, both of which have an aesthetic that happens to be right on trend - check out the overwhelming popularity of combat boots if you don't believe me!
If you're concerned about a shearling coat swamping your petite frame or making your curvy one look bulky, then go with a leather jacket featuring a shearling collar like Alexa Chung and Vanessa Hudgens have in the photograph below. Shearling also works beautifully as an embellishment on vests, shoes and handbags. Expect to be seeing a lot more of it on international catwalks and in high street stores as this incredibly wearable trend takes off.

No bogans here... Actresses Blake Lively and Keira Knightley are loving their oversized Burberry Prorsum shearling coats.
