Sharp shoulders

They're all over the catwalks and some of the biggest names have been spotted wearing them, but the real question is: will big shoulders ever make a return to the mainstream? Shoulder pads were huge - literally - in the 80s, so much so that they became iconic of the tragic 80s throwback, along with legwarmers, hair scrunchies and fishnet stockings. When something has had a negative connotation for so long, it's hard to imagine that it can ever become cool again, but this seems to be exactly what is happening right now.
To be fair, the big shoulder that is being put forward by designers in 2009 is not exactly the same as the power-suit style of the 80s. It's more 'sharp' than big, giving it a futuristic, rather than retro, appeal. Nonetheless, it's a fine line that's being drawn between high fashion and downright dagginess. Unless you're well known for being a fashionista, I would advise you not to invest in this look until it's become slightly more established in the public consciousness.
At the moment, the sharp shoulder is mostly being added to tailored jackets, and has become a favourite of Beyonce, Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham. As to whether this look will make it to the fashion mainstream? We'll just have to wait and see! Here are some celebs who've been snapped sporting the new style of big shoulder.
