Remembering Yves Saint Laurent
June 3rd 2008 05:46
Yves Saint Laurent, who died last week aged 71, was largely responsible for the way modern women dress. "I wanted to put myself at women's disposal," he once said. "To serve them, to serve their bodies, their gestures, their life."
Indeed, in a time when most women were still wearing dresses and dresses only, Yves Saint Laurent created the pant-suit - a modern take on the male business suit. Through the latter part of the 20th Century, the French designer reigned supreme in his home country and through fashion magazines took his designs to the world.
Despite his success, the designer was an introverted man with a small circle of close friends. "He was someone who was very shy and introverted, who had only very few friends and hid himself from the world," Saint Laurent's former lover and business partner Pierre Berge told France Info radio.
"[Coco] Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power," Berge said.
After a long illness, Yves Saint Laurent died at his home in France, but will be remembered as a trailblazer and trendsetter, and one of the most influential names in fashion over the last 100 years.

I owned the odd YSL shirt in my day, he was very stylish but also practical with women's clothing.
Another icon gone.
