Red carpet stunners at the 69th Golden Globe Awards
January 16th 2012 10:01
I'll admit it right now: I didn't watch the Golden Globes. I rarely do. But every year, without fail, I'll click my way through the photos of what the actresses wore... and for the first time ever, I actually feel compelled to write about it. Why? Aside from the fact that I miraculously have the time (with my wonderful husband blessing me with two hours of blissful, baby-free blogging), the reasons are threefold...
1) Sarah Michelle Gellar's dress.
One word: wow!
In a sea of beautiful, but rather same-y dresses, Sarah Michelle Gellar was like a magical maiden of whimsy in her strapless Monique Lhuiller gown. The perfect fit, combined with understated accessories, smoky eye makeup and a classic high ponytail, was enough to shoot the ex-vampire slayer to the top of my Best Dressed list.
And the fact that it was chosen by her two-year-old daughter Charlotte just makes me love it all the more.
2) The winners on the night were also the style stars.
Often when it comes to awards shows, you'll have your red carpet fashion winners and then your actual award winners (who for me, tend to slip into the background a bit).
Not this time. Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, Laura Dern, and Michelle Williams all picked up awards on the night, and each of these talented ladies just happened to look amazing on the red carpet too. The only exception - possibly - was Best Actress in a Drama winner Meryl Streep, whose material-heavy black gown swamped her figure somewhat, but it was still a long way from being a disastrous choice.
3) There was not a single dress that I truly hated.
Even Tilda Swinton looked good, and that's saying something! In fact, if I were to make any complaints at all, it would be that there were not many fashion risk-takers at this particular Golden Globes. The outfits of the actresses were overwhelmingly neutral in tone, with countless long white bridalwear-inspired frocks, sparkly silver figure-hugging dresses, and floor-sweeping goddess gowns in various shades of beige, blush and gold.
And black. Loads and loads of black.
My favourite from this pack? Undoubtedly that of the magnificent Angelina Jolie, whose blush-toned, red-trimmed Atelier Versace gown made her look every bit the Hollywood queen. Having a cane-toting Brad Pitt on her arm certainly didn't do her any harm either!

Honorable mention for my Best Dressed list: third-time Golden Globe winner Claire Danes, in a J.Mendel gown.
