Why there's no such thing as nail colour trends
July 2nd 2010 05:05
By definition, a 'trend' must have some kind of prevailing tendency, that is, there must be some mode of similarity between the people or things that are following that particular trend - or else it is simply not a trend at all. And yet, when it comes to nail colours, we are so often bombarded with suggestions that 'this season's hottest trend' is one particular colour, when in actual fact it is many! Sure, there are occasions when one style will dominate over all others, but most of the time, nail 'trends' are as diverse as the models, celebrities and stylish women who are wearing them - and in my opinion, it is all just a marketing ploy to get women to buy as many different colours as they possibly can, regardless of whether those colours suit their own unique tastes.
Check out this gallery of how to 'Get The Stars' Must-Have Summer Nail Trends' if you aren't convinced already. Miley's wearing red, Beyonce's nails are gold, and there's every colour from gothic black to sunflower yellow to baby blue - not to mention the 'barely there' polish of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon's talons. I'm not seeing any trends here! And the simple reason for that is because there are none.
The same goes for the catwalk; if Miuccia Prada's models have French tips then you can just about guarantee that Karl Lagerfeld's will not. The colour chosen for the models will merely correlate to the themes of the latest collection that they are wearing, and this will be different from catwalk to catwalk.
The simple fact is that when it comes to nails, anything goes. It's a matter of personal choice, and as such can speak volumes about your taste, and what mood you were in when you decided to polish your nails. If your nails are ragged, bitten back, or bearing the chipped remains of a polish from three weeks ago, then make no mistake: this will speak volumes of your mental state as well.
It may seem of little import (and in the grand scheme of things, it is!) but it's worth keeping in mind. There may be no such thing as 'nail colour trends' but I think I like it better that way. It means that our choice of colour (or lack thereof) is not determined by anything less than personal taste, and as such our nails become a much truer representation of who we are, when others have nothing else to go on.
