My favourite red carpet looks of 2009
December 18th 2009 02:03
While it's often more fun to have a laugh at the worst dressed celebrities (here's some of them, with more coming soon), I also love to see stars at their absolute best. The dresses worn by these five red carpet beauties were ranked as my favourites of this year, mostly because of their elegance, fashion-forward stance and undeniable style. And so, without further ado...
Like her acting style, Marion Cotillard's fashion sense is subtle and refined. I've never seen her look bad on the red carpet! This dress, in particular, made my Top Five list because as well as being flattering and appropriate for the occasion (the Los Angeles premiere of her film Public Enemies), it was also unique in that it featured a gorgeous mosaic print. Mosaic is something we haven't seen in many years (in fabrics, anyway) and the designer Elie Saab had it cut into an effortlessly ladylike shape, a design that just looked smashing on her French client. Silver Jimmy Choo peep-toes and a neat coiffure finished the look. Magnifique!
She's one of the brightest stars of the 21st Century, and now the award-winning singer, songwriter, composer, actress, philanthropist and producer (whew!) that is Alicia Keys can add one more accomplishment to her ever-increasing list: fashion inspiration! The mauve Armani Prive gown she wore to the 81st Academy Awards in February was nothing short of divine. Topped off with Fred Leighton jewellery, fabulous hair and makeup, and a Zufi Alexander clutch, Keys looked every inch a goddess at an occasion where there is plenty of competition for the role.
It's rare to find a best dressed list that doesn't feature the lovely Emma Watson these days, and this one is no exception! The fashion icon, designer, and current face of Burberry looked superb in her vintage Ossie Clark gown at the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Despite having a low neckline and a thigh-high slit, the dress didn't reveal too much of the 19-year-old's figure (although the London winds certainly did try their best). Always classy, always fabulous, Emma Watson is a true inspiration for her age group when it comes to sartorial style.
While reality stars tend to annoy me - mostly due to the dubious ways in which they attain stardom - I have to admit that The Hills star Audrina Partridge does know how to dress! While she can be overexposed at times, the 24-year-old looked absolutely gorgeous in her Michelle Mason minidress as she attended a red carpet event in Hollywood in July this year. I really am coveting this dress: the neckline is futuristic and a little bit Star Trek, the cut is so flattering and it shows off just the right amount of skin. Paired with simple black peep-toes and natural-looking hair and makeup and you've got a look that would be fabulous on just about anyone.
The epitome of grace under pressure, Taylor Swift stunned the crowds surrounding the red carpet at this year's MTV Video Music Awards by her arrival in a form-fitting and spangled, but oh-so-elegant Kaufman Franco gown. The talented young singer is getting a well-deserved reputation for never putting a foot wrong on the red carpet - it's almost too tough to decide which dress of hers I love the most! This one is the winner, though, and with her careful accessorising with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery and bright red lips and nails, Taylor Swift's style on this night established her as one of the best dressed celebrities of 2009.
Many more stars made the shortlist (including Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Rachel McAdams) but in my opinion it was these five who really nailed their red carpet appearances. May their styles inspire you when you go to select your next formal gown! As for the worst dressed of 2009? Well, that's for another blog...
