Military boots

If you've been keeping an eye on the celebrity circuit, then no doubt you'll have noticed the proliferation of chunky, black, combat-style boots adorning the fashionable feet of Hollywood's A-list. Whether they're a reaction to the overwhelmingly uncomfortable skyscraper heels that have dominated fashion for several seasons now, or it was simply their turn for a 21st Century revival, the military boot has made its return in a major (haha!) way.... and is giving the thigh-high boot a serious run for its money in terms of what chic women will be wearing on their feet this winter.
This is one trend that works best when the ideas of irony and contradiction are applied. Of course, you can wear them however you like, but in my opinion the hottest look is to pair the tough-looking, masculine boots with an outfit that is otherwise gentle and feminine. In other words, a pink dress, a floral print, or anything floaty is sure to provide a stark contrast with the chunky black boots. It's the opposite of what people expect, and as such can really make a statement to the world that although you may seem like a lovely girl, there's a certain don't-mess-with-me aspect to your personality as well - and therein lies the awesomeness of wearing boots such as these.
Another less obvious contradiction that can be expressed with military boots is that of class distinction: that is, classically elegant garments on top, paired with the distinctively grungy combat boots underneath. Jessica Alba, Nicky Hilton, and Emma Roberts all pull this off beautifully in the photograph below: Jessica's posh scarf and handbag, Nicky's understated tweed coat and Emma's jaunty grey fedora are all in distinct contrast with their down-to-Earth combat boots, and needless to say, it works!
While these boots are certainly not pretty - let's face it, they're bordering on downright ugly! - they do add a certain strength to an outfit that would be lacking if you chose to wear, say, ballerina flats or a stiletto heel. Added to this is the fact that they are so damn comfortable, resilient, practical and warm, and it's easy to see why so many celebs have chosen to wear a military boot instead.
