Lady in red...

In a season where sequins and sparkles are dominating the dresses worn by Sydney's bright young things, you can still stand out from the crowd the old-fashioned way by slipping into something a little more... red! We all know that red is the colour of passion, love and all that jazz, but did you know that men actually consider a woman wearing red to be more attractive than those who aren't?
Not that we dress for men, of course - we dress for ourselves - but it's definitely something to consider if you're terminally single and are looking to make a real impact. The brightest of reds will make you feel sexy and powerful, and if you pick the right red for your complexion it can also be extremely flattering. Those of us blessed with dark skin can get away with wearing any shade they choose, and interestingly, so can blondes. Redheads need to be a little more selective but as Amy Adams shows in the pic below, there are some beautiful berry shades that won't clash with your hair like a tomato-red will.
Red can be worn during the day but I only ever wear it at night, simply because I like to complement my outfit with bright red lipstick - a look that is just too overstated for daytime wear! You can get away with nude lips but it's best to match your lipstick as closely as possible to the shade of your dress, like Katherine Heigl in the photo below.
Short red dresses are truly fabulous as they emphasize the sexiness of the colour by showing off your legs, while at the same time eliminating the risk of being swathed in too much vibrant fabric. You can wear long red dresses but it's important that they have a lower neckline, so as not to overwhelm. You want to be wearing the dress, not having the dress wear you!
While I always encourage my readers to take risks when it comes to their outfits, as pushing the style envelope is one of the most fun elements of fashion, I know that red dresses aren't for everyone. If you're a little on the shy side and would rather just look classy than be the centre of attention, then why not go with red accessories instead? A red handbag, or bright red shoes will lift a simple outfit without screaming "Look at me!"
Black may be the go-to colour when you don't know what to wear, but when you do know that you want make an impact, stepping out in red will always be a fabulous option. It's one of those colours that will always be in style, regardless of the changing shapes of the clothes from season to season. If you pick the right shade of red for your skin tone, and keep the fabric-to-skin ratio in balance, then you can't go wrong. Be sexy, be confident and be the lady in red!

Vanessa Hudgens and Blake Lively know that to wear a long red dress, you also need to show some skin
