Horizontal stripes: back again!
August 26th 2009 00:49
That's right, horizontal stripes are back in force! Whether worn as a top, dress or skirt, horizontal striping is the way to go, and contrary to popular opinion they won't make you look fat - if anything, according to scientists, horizontal stripes will make you look thinner. At the moment in celeb-land it's all about the classic black and white, shades of grey, or navy and red.
Horizontal stripes tend to evoke a classic, slightly masculine feel, which is why they're the ideal pattern for skirts and dresses as they create a balanced effect. They don't all need to be the same width, either, as Kelly Ripa shows in the pic below; in fact different-sized stripes can create a very flattering optical illusion.
If the basic black and white is too simplistic for you then by all means choose contrasting colours - I personally love Jessica and Cameron's choices of navy and red. Think nautical, think Paris (the one in France!) and think clean and simple, and you'll be on the right track when it comes to selecting your own horizontal stripes.
