Funky gumboots!
July 18th 2009 01:58
Now this is not so much of a new trend, as a reminder: if you need to wear something as inherently daggy as gumboots, then why not make them funky? Once upon a time the only gumboots on the market for adults were basic black, but a few years ago some clever designer seized the funky gumboots idea and suddenly, polka-dotted, zebra-striped and psychedelic patterns were everywhere!
The beauty of gumboots (or "wellies", as some prefer to call them) is that they are comfortable, durable, and so, so cute. Best of all, they won't break the bank: although you could certainly pay hundreds for them if you wanted some from a niche designer, you needn't pay more than $30. This season in Australia, they're everywhere: I just picked up a bargain pair from Kmart (yes, you can find trendy gear in Kmart!) for $27. And they have hot pink pom poms! Woo hoo!
Obviously, there is a time and a place for gumboots, and the office on a Monday is not it. But a music festival, a bonfire party, or a weekend at a friend's farm? Absolutely perfect. Wear them with shorts, leggings, a mini, a dress with a clashing pattern, over skinny jeans... the choices are endless. And whether you go for floral, tweed, or a crazy combination of colours, just remember: the funkier they are, the better!

I remember when I was a kid, I absolutely lived in my sparkly rainbow gumboots on wet days... in a way, this trend is like re-living that... embracing your inner child. Thanks for commenting
