On the fringe
May 31st 2010 12:38
Fringing is having something of a fashion moment right now, popping up on dresses, bikinis, shoes, and most recently on the handbags of just about every young star with a paparazzi following. Frontier-inspired but never hokey, the fringed handbag has a certain bohemian element to it that will liven up your outfit without overtaking it.
Designers like Prada, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana already have their own interpretations of the fringed bag available for those of us with no budget to speak of, but otherwise you can expect to see these bags popping up in chain stores and on the high street very soon. And don't forget the op shops; while you might be hard pressed to find a genuine 1970s fringed piece, there's always the possibility of spotting the ideal bag from a more recent fringing revival.
My personal favourite fringed handbag style is oversized, suede and that perfect shade of brown that lies somewhere between beige and chocolate. Like with most trends this is one that can be moulded to your own personal tastes; whether you want your fringing dramatic or minimalistic you can have it either way. Check out the celebrity photos for inspiration... Jessica Biel's chosen to keep her fringing subtle and understated, Miley and Megan have gone for twisted-strap versions, and Ashley Tisdale has forsaken the brown altogether for an almost hairy-looking black leather version.
Whatever your style and budget, there's likely to be a fringed bag out there just waiting to take its place on your arm, and the beauty of these bags is that they go with just about any outfit (evening dresses excluded!) Just make sure you keep the fringed bag away from your cat.... I speak from personal experience. Happy fringing, ladies.
