Five items no wardrobe should be without

Most fashion is fluid and constantly changing, but some looks are timeless and will never be out of style. I've identified five of these items that no modern woman's wardrobe should be without. In no particular order, they are:
1) The white collared shirt. It's classic, elegant and it lends an instant "smart-casual" to an otherwise casual outfit. A well-cut white collared shirt is just so versatile - you can wear it to work, out to dinner or with jeans and cute flats. It's not eye-catching but it is always appropriate regardless of the situation.
2) Low-cut Converse All Stars. Pick the colour that most suits your personality (I prefer the navy blue) and you've got a super-comfortable sneaker that works with jeans, shorts and even some dresses. These shoes are the kind that look better the more you wear them - classic but slightly grungy. Perfect.
3) A black coat. Whether it's a trench, pea coat or double-breasted, a basic black coat is a must for every woman's winter wardrobe. It goes with everything, so be prepared to look around for a while until you find the one that's right for you.
4) Bootcut jeans in medium-wash stretch denim. Once you've found a brand and style that fits you perfectly, you'll have the ideal jeans to chuck on when you don't have time to select a "proper" outfit. Denim, in some form, will always be in fashion as jeans trends tend to morph very slowly. Ripped jeans are big in Hollywood right now but can only be dressed down - for a wardrobe staple, you're better off going for a classic design and spending a bit more than you would for a short-lived trend.
5) A black tank top. Like the others, the black tank is the ideal go-to when you need something to pair with a bright skirt or your basic jeans. Wearing chunky accessories, like a wide bangle, is necessary to keep this look from being too boring. Layer a cardi or another top over your tank and you've got a comfy casual outfit.
There are many more wardrobe staples to be had but these five are the ones that work best for me. Remember, it's always worth spending a bit more on your basics - tank top excluded - than spending your cash on flash-in-the-pan fashions. On those busy mornings, it's your basic items that will save you from a fashion crisis time and time again.
