Celebrity Style: Carey Mulligan
April 4th 2010 04:26
She first hit the big screen in 2005's Pride and Prejudice but it wasn't until Carey Mulligan appeared in the 2009 film An Education that audiences really began to sit up and take notice. Despite Mulligan thinking she was "completely awful" in the movie, it seems that the Hollywood bigwigs thought otherwise: she received various major award nominations for the role, including that of Best Actress at both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. It’s her charming personality that has us most enthralled, however: she’s smart, humble, and determined to be respected for her work above all else.
Mulligan, who turns 25 next month, is not overly fussed about what she wears and as such, tends to favour minimalism. "I don’t really care that much about fashion, I just have a brilliant stylist who dresses me, and in my own life, I’m pretty simple," she says. When photographed out and about, the sometimes-blonde, sometimes-brunette will usually be wearing something basic and practical, and more often than not, it'll be black.
Mulligan famously turned down Vogue editor Anna Wintour's advice that she should wear a short dress to the Oscars: “I was like ‘No, that is so not what I had in my head when I was six years old!’” she exclaimed. Instead, she wore a long black Prada gown embellished with crystals and tiny pieces of silverware.... eclectic, yes, but it worked!
While it's apparent that Mulligan prefers to err on the dark side - and fair enough, what young starlet doesn't love black? - she does don something a little more colourful from time to time. Her dresses are usually sweet and ladylike, tailored rather than flowing, and she understands the importance of balance. If the frock has an unusual element (such as, I don't know, photographs of people sunbaking on the skirt...) then her shoes and accessories will be simple. If it features a bright floral pattern, then she'll team it with tough-looking heels to stop herself from veering into prissy territory. It's this sense of balance that really puts Mulligan (or, as she would insist, her stylist) into the category of fashion muse for us non-Hollywood folk.
Her 8-month relationship with fellow actor Shia LaBeouf may have helped make her a paparazzi target, but it's not as though she tried: on the contrary, she and LaBeouf keep their relationship as far from the tabloid media as possible, and deliberately choose not to walk the red carpet together. "Neither one of us are fame whores," said LaBeouf last month. "It works out. It’s not like we’re the premiere couple - we’re not the red carpet king and queen."
"She’s an unbelievably thought-provoking actress, the most talented actress I’ve met in my life, by leaps and bounds," he continued. The pair will be starring together in the upcoming film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
As for Carey Mulligan's future? She'll be starring in The Greatest, Never Let Me Go, and the Wall Street sequel, all of which are being released in Australia later this year. But right now, more than anything, she just wants a break from her hectic schedule. "I did The View, then a photo shoot, and took two red eyes in two days, and went to a critics' award show, and at some point in the evening my agent came up to me and was asking for the only half hour I had in the next two weeks," she lamented. "And I was home, so I wanted to see my friends and I was like, 'Don't take the five seconds left that I have. I just don't want to be in a movie! I don't want to have the responsibility of being a big actress, I don't want to be on a poster.'"
We love that realness but with a talent like that, Carey Mulligan may just become a big actress against her will. To read more about this savvy young star, check out this great interview here.
