Celebrity Style: Blake Lively
November 9th 2010 05:04
She's a queen bee of the small screen, a rising star in Hollywood, and was recently called 'The Jackie O of her time'. At 23 years of age, actress Blake Lively has also become a Gen Y fashion icon, with a personal style that is at once offbeat, and yet beautifully pulled together. And no, it's not her stylist's fault... because she doesn't even have one!
The youngest of five siblings, Blake was born and raised in southern California, and began her acting career at the age of eleven. Despite the early start (and the fact that acting was in her genes, with both of her parents being actors themselves), Blake wasn't overly fussed with the film industry, until her brother coerced her into auditioning for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in 2005. She not only won the role, but received a nomination for a Teen Choice Award for her performance, and later went on to star in the film's sequel.
She also starred in the movies Accepted (alongside Justin Long) and Elvis and Anabelle, but it wasn't until she was cast as Serena van der Woodsen in the hit TV show Gossip Girl in 2007 that Lively really began to get herself noticed. She's now a red carpet regular and, due to her sunny personality, gorgeous long blonde hair and classic California Girl looks, has become a regular on magazine covers and fashion shoots as well.
Lively has always had a keen interest in fashion (thanks largely to her mother, who dressed her in handmade and vintage attire when she was a child) and says that her own sense of style is constantly evolving, depending on where she's at in her life. "Clothes are a personal expression, and my style is as ever-changing as I am: I'm growing, maturing, developing; I'm going through new things in my life, and with that, what I choose to wear changes," she says.
While she intends to start a family before she gets too long in the tooth ("I want babies. Lots of babies!" she told OK! Magazine recently), in the meantime she's more than happy to keep working on her career. Her title role in last year's The Private Lives of Pippa Lee showed critics that she's more than just a pretty face (and a hot body), and her most recent film, The Town - in which she played a troubled young mother caught up in Boston's seedy underworld - has received mostly positive reviews. She'll next be seen on the big screen in 2011's superhero flick Green Lantern, and, of course, will be continuing her role of Serena on TV's Gossip Girl.
As for her seemingly unabashed confidence in movies and in the media? It's all just about playing the part, she told The Town director and lead actor Ben Affleck in a recent interview with him. "With acting, I think half of it is just acting confident. We stand on these red carpets and pose in these dresses, but we're all only so confident. It doesn't mean we think we're great looking or anything. It's all a façade," Lively said, adding that she's "naturally very shy."
And when it comes to her choices - whether they're personal or business related - Blake says that ultimately, the only person whose opinion matters is her own. "I look at anything in life like as long as you do what you believe in, then it's going to work out. Because even if other people don't like what you're doing, you're happy because you did what you believed in."

Whether it's a Lanvin gown straight off the Paris runways, or a simple Madewell frock, Blake sure knows how to dress!
