Celebrity shoe trend: Oxford flats

August 12th 2010 05:41
Geek chic is alive and well! Forget skyscraper heels and thigh-high boots because the latest in celebrity footwear is flat, comfortable, and distinctly preppy. The Oxford flat has been spotted on everyone from Taylor Swift to Rihanna to the Jessicas (in this case Biel and Alba), demonstrating both its wide appeal and the fact that it can be tailored to suit just about anyone's style.

Ultra-preppy Oxford flats by Steve Madden.

The Oxford - also known as the 'Balmoral' or the 'Derby', depending where you're from - was traditionally a man's shoe, but its popularity among women has lately been on the up and up. Various high-heeled versions have come and gone, but for now it's all about the classic flat style, usually made of leather and sometimes cutely capped.

As for what to wear them with? Essentially it's whatever looks right to you. Some stars have worn theirs with jeans, while others have chosen to make their girly skirts and dresses look more masculine by wearing their Oxfords with them. Personally I think Rosario Dawson has nailed it in the photograph below by pairing her Oxford flats with cuffed-up jeans, but as with anything in fashion, the decision is entirely yours!

I've always loved oxford flats, but I'm usually too nervous that they won't go with anything I have to buy them.

By the looks of this though, I think I might give them another look the next time shoe-buying time comes around!

I've never owned a pair myself... my brother did a few years back though, when they made a return to fashion for men.

I like the capped toe version the best. I figure that if you're going to go retro with footwear, you may as well go all the way!

Thanks for commenting angelbird

I love them! I saw a girl at a party a few weeks ago wearing some black and white Oxfords and couldnt stop staring at them; I eventually had to ask where she bought them (Chapel Street) I've been on the look out for a second hand pair ever since. They remind me of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal =)
