Biggest celebrity fashion disasters of 2009: Part Two
December 28th 2009 07:15
Celebrityland had its fair share of fashion disasters in the early part of 2009 - as Part One of this list will attest - but they were by no means the worst of the year! Here are five more celebrity outfits that left good taste by the wayside.
Sandra Bullock.
When you've had your 45th birthday, it's time to face the sad fact that the boob tube and miniskirt combo probably isn't going to work as well for you as it did 20 years ago. The awkward two-toned draping, the shapeless skirt, and the ankle boots all conspire to make this outfit one big mish-mash of awful. Though considering Bullock is at the premiere of her 2009 movie All About Steve (which one critic aptly labelled "an unmitigated disaster"), this outfit could be deemed quite appropriate for the occasion.
Chloë Sevigny.
Once upon a time, actress Chloë Sevigny was considered a major trendsetter, but over the years her outfits have just become more and more ugly. This particular one is no exception. I'm all for pushing the fashion envelope but this leather all-in-one... thing... is just not working for me. Saggy in the front and ill-fitting at the top, with a zipper, pintucks, boring shoes and limp hair, this outfit qualifies as one of Sevigny's worst ever.
Leighton Meester.
I like Leighton Meester. She's ballsy, and not afraid to experiment with different sartorial styles. All too often though, she finds herself on worst-dressed lists because her choices are just too over-the-top. If you're going to wear an unusual pattern like this, it needs to be on a dress of a simple shape, like a basic maxi dress. By the same token, if your dress is cut into an oddball shape (is that a sports bra?) then it needs to be monochromatic - preferably basic black - so as not to overwhelm the eye. In this case, the dress is wearing Leighton, not the other way around, which is something that can happen to even the most extroverted among us.
Tori Spelling.
Ever wonder what Tori Spelling would look like without having had all that plastic surgery? Me too. The problem here, however, is not her face and wonky boobs but her choice of outfit. The shape of this dress is completely unflattering, accentuating all the worst parts of her body, and the colour is more revolting than regal. The ruffles and pearls give an old-lady feel and her hair looks stuck in place. Ghastly. Hard to believe she's only 36...
Britney Spears.
At first glance this dress actually looks half decent, until you notice the wrinkles, the poorly-stitched hem and the fact that it only just covers her left breast! One of the most basic elements of fashion - nay, clothing - is that it covers your body, and if it's only just managing to do that then it's a major no-no. The tacky blonde hair extensions, the lack of a much-needed bra, and the arm bracelet that is distorting her bicep all join forces to make this outfit an absolute crime of fashion. The bag passes, but is that a sales tag hanging off it? All in all Britney looks really disheveled, and not in a sexy way.
Not everyone has a flair for fashion, but most of us do have some level of good taste that applies to what we wear in public. It's outfits like these - the ones that taste forgot - that really stand out for me as the biggest fashion disasters, because these celebs weren't trying to make an obvious statement (like, say, Lady Gaga or Rihanna) but they still looked shocking nonetheless. And while it's fun to laugh at the style mistakes of the A-listers (because let's face it, few of them have the time to read articles like these!) the most important thing to keep in mind is not to replicate these mistakes yourself.
I hope you all had a wonderful 2009! Keep it fun and fabulous, and I'll be seeing you again in the new year.
